This is a palace in Jaipur which stands on the beach of a lake – just like the palace of a princess in a story in dreams. When you see Jal Mahal for the first time, everything stops for a moment. The water of the lake is so calm that the reflection of the palace in it appears like a perfect mirror. And in that calmness, the palace says a lot without saying anything. Jal Mahal literally means “Water Palace” — and it really does seem like a dream settled in water. It was built by Maharaja Madho Singh in the 18th century, probably for roaming or hunting. Its special feature is that out of the five floors of this palace, four are below water, and only one floor above is visible. Today people cannot go inside it, but seeing it from the bank of the lake is a different experience. Especially when the sun rises, and the whole sky turns orange or pink… then the Jal Mahal looks completely golden. The reflection of the palace in the water and the mountains around it, both together create a picture which you feel not with your eyes but with your heart. These days a beautiful walking path has been made around the lake. There you can find chaat wali, Rajasthani jewellery stalls, camel rides of local people, and sometimes even artists of folk music playing ravanahatha. Small things make a trip memorable. The area of Jal Mahal is so peaceful that even if you go there alone, you get a good chance to meet yourself. You sit near the lake, the wind touches your face, you can hear the temple bell from a distance, and you just keep looking at that palace. Maybe that is why people say that Jaipur is not just history, it is also a feeling.
